Margaret Marie Hawkinson
April 5, 1917 - December 18, 2020
SAN DIEGO — Margaret Hawkinson, 103, passed away peacefully after a heart attack on December 18, 2020. Margaret was born April 5, 1917, in Lignite, North Dakota to Bena (Smith) and Peter Johnson, a prominent banker. She grew up in Crosby, North Dakota, the youngest of three children. Both her parents had college degrees.
Margaret was quite an athlete in her younger days at Crosby High School, and she helped her basketball team win the league championship. She was an accomplished tennis player, sang in the Madrigal Club and was president of her college sorority for two years. Margaret attended the University of North Dakota, and after graduation she married Howard Hawkinson on July 6, 1941.
After first moving to New York City, they later moved to Austin, Texas, where Howard completed his education at the University of Texas, and Margaret received a graduate school scholarship and studied speech pathology. Upon completion of their education, they moved to San Diego, where they raised their two daughters, Ann and Jane.
Margaret and Howard were married for 60 years and lived in Mission Hills. Howard was employed as an engineer at General Dynamics and later at Miramar Naval Air Station. Margaret worked for the San Diego Unified School District as a Speech Pathologist for over 25 years at Albert Schweitzer
School. She completed her Master’s Degree in Human Behavior in 1970.
Margaret and Howard were world travelers; they visited nearly all the continents and all 50 states. She was a life member of the San Diego Woman’s Club where she enjoyed playing bridge.
Margaret has been a member of First Presbyterian Church of San Diego for over sixty years, where she served as a deacon and also taught Sunday school. She has been the oldest living member for the past three years.
Survivors include daughters Ann Winder (Tim) of San Diego; Jane Wehrle (Karl) of La Jolla; six grandchildren Adam, Elizabeth, Stephanie (Greg), Caroline (Kevin), Kristin (William), Stephen; five great-grandchildren Bryan, Andrew, Westin, Austin, and Samantha.
She will be fondly missed by all who met and knew her. Private family services are pending. Donations can be made to: First Presbyterian Church, 320 Date St., San Diego or the Salvation Army.
