Charles Albert Lazzaro, Jr.
April 10, 1931 - December 26, 2020
SAN DIEGO — Charles Lazzaro, a native of San Diego, passed away in his sleep. He was educated in San Diego City Schools, and obtained a Master’s Degree in School Administration via San Diego State University.
Since his father was career Navy during WWII, Charles was attracted to becoming a military pilot via the Marine Corps. Rather than continue in military aviation, which included Hawaii at that time, he decided to return to San Diego and utilize his educational degrees. He taught school at Frontier Elementary which became the Sports Arena. Later, he left the classroom to become a resource teacher with an emphasis on media. His goal was to become an
elementary principal which he fulfilled. One unusual assignment involved new students who came with their families from Viet Nam, etc., to San Diego. It was difficult to find instructors who could speak their various languages, but it was necessary.
Even though the career Charles had throughout his adult life involved San Diego City Schools, his conversations and interests often centered around the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was simultaneously involved with 3D ANGLICO RESERVES as a Lieutenant
Colonel. He sometimes coordinated land, sea and air operations when in the field.
Charles and his wife, Patricia, almost made it to their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Naturally, they met at a school. Since summers were usually free, they had many opportunities to travel. Their two sons joined them.
Gary now lives in Annapolis with his wife, Kathryn, and their three children. Anthony, 9, Rebecca, 7, and Vanessa who is 4. Terry and his wife, Nicole, and their daughter, Taya, also 9, live in Rancho Viejo, CA.
Charles often reminisced about his carefree childhood in east San Diego. He and his cousin, Harold Ward and others, were free to explore and enjoy open spaces. Few outdoor restrictions back then were placed on children. Once the Charger stadium was in progress, Charles purchased season tickets. He was faithful to the team regardless of the highs and lows they experienced. He also liked to attend the annual Hoover High School reunions during the summer.
The TRIDENT SOCIETY was in charge of funeral details. Due to COVID-19, services will be postponed until arrangements can be made with the Marine Corps for a military funeral at the Miramar National Cemetery, which was his wish.
