It took many to put on a stadium event

- STEPHEN SHUSHAN ASSISTANT STADIUM MANAGER (1985-2003)

There are so many memorable events that happened at the Stadium. However, what I will always remember is the hard work and dedication of the Stadium employees and all of the other organizations that made the events happen.

Stadium workers (groundskeepers, electricians, plumbers, custodial, etc.) put in extremely long hours getting the facility ready. Days of 15-20 hours were not unusual as the Stadium went from Padres baseball to Aztecs football on the same day and then back to baseball for the following day. There were shifts of 10 straight days during a Padres homestand and then throw in a Chargers game on Sunday. Most people could not fathom all that went into preparing the Stadium. Prior to the Padres leaving, the Stadium was the busiest outdoor facility in America. The employees took so much pride in what they accomplished with very little public recognition. They were the true stars of the event.

It was definitely a team effort to conduct events. Along with Stadium workers, the following organizations made the events happen: event organizers (Chargers, Padres, SDSU, Holiday Bowl, etc.); Police; Traffic Control; Fire; Private Security; Food Concessionaire; Ace Parking; Medical; and MTS. It was a thing of beauty on how each organization worked together in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for the attendees. The Stadium literally put San Diego on the map and made it a major city. Millions of people watching the three Super Bowls, World Series games and other events decided to visit or even move here after seeing our beautiful city. The investment the City made in 1967 to build it and the future renovations was an economic home run. The Stadium will be missed. The City and all of the workers will have so many great memories
