Diamondbacks 6, Padres 3

- JEFF SANDERS

Batter’s box: Following a weeklong bout with the flu, Fernando Tatis Jr. started a second straight game, this time at DH. He used his legs anyway, singling off pitcher Josh Green in the first inning, moving from first to third on another ball that caromed off Green and scoring on Manny Machado’s pop-up to short in very shallow left field. Tatis was 1-for-2 in the game. … LF Tommy Pham ended an 0-for-19 start to Cactus League action with an eighth-inning single. … Machado hit his third double of the spring in his two at-bats. … Ha-seong Kim went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts and a walk in lowering his spring batting average to .111. … Eric Hosmer is hitting .158 after going 0-for-3 and Jurickson Profar is down to .073 after his 0-for-3.

Balls and strikes: LHP Adrian Morejon rebounded after allowing a first-pitch, leadoff homer to Ketel Marte and an infield single, retiring seven batters in a row at one point in escaping without allowing further damage. He didn’t walk a batter and stranded runners on second and third in the third inning — a shift-beating double followed a two-out single — with a strikeout of Christian Walker, Morejón’s fifth of the game. He threw 35 of his 47 pitches for strikes. … RHP Mark Melancon, Craig Stammen and Taylor Williams all threw a scoreless inning. … RHP Pierce Johnson’s spring ERA rose to 27.00 after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. … RHP Dan Altavilla allowed a run in 11⁄3 innings and RHP Miguel Diaz allowed two runs in the ninth.

Extra bases: Josh Vanmeter started at second base for the Diamondbacks and hit a monstrous home run off Altavilla. The Padres drafted Vanmeter in the fifth round in 2013 and later traded him to the Reds for Rule 5 catcher Luis Torrens. Vanmeter has a .676 OPS through his first 121 games in the majors. Arizona acquired him last August for reliever Archie Bradley.

On deck: RHP Yu Darvish will make his second Cactus League start at 1:10 p.m. today in Goodyear against the Reds. LHP Ryan Weathers, in competition for a spot in the rotation, is among the pitchers scheduled to follow Darvish.
