AUSTIN — Gayle L Moyers (Gayle Lorraine Cummings) Age 82, passed away suddenly January 16, 2021, her son Bryan by her side. Preceded in death by her parents William and Virginia Cummings, step mother Betty Cummings, and she is survived by her brothers Tommy Cummings, Bill Cummings, sister Kristen Schermerhorn, daughter Jolie Castellucci (Mike), sons Paul Mayo (Kellie), Bryan Mayo (Herb Schoening).
Gayle was born May 22, 1938 in San Diego, CA. She graduated from El Cajon High School in 1956 and went on to obtain a degree from San Diego State University. After teaching in the Poway Unified School District and fueled by her passion to accelerate learning and comprehension with those who were struggling, she founded the Moyers Center for Learning in Old Town, San Diego.
In 2001 she moved to Austin, TX. An educational therapist and reading specialist, Gayle helped children and adults overcome learning challenges through the development and implementation of auditory processing programs and teaching methods that reach students unable to benefit from traditional instructional programs. Her legacy program is Learning Ears by Moyers Learning Systems.
Encouraged by a friend to play bridge, she rediscovered her passion for the game and quickly rose to the level of Bronze Life Master. She became a teacher and mentor at The Bridge Center of Austin instilling love and fun into the game of bridge. Gayle was always sharply dressed. Inquisitive by nature and fiercely competitive. She loved cooking, opera, gardening, Neil Diamond and beagles.
The final decade of her life, Gayle battled breast, lung and brain cancer. Always upbeat, never complaining, she was supported through each phase of her recoveries by her lifelong friend Jean Cox, close friends at the Bridge Center of Austin, her French Place and Griffith neighbors and family. Gayle dedicated her life to making a difference through her tenacity and passion to improve education for others. She will be deeply missed.
Memorials preferred to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library – dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five.
