SAN DIEGO — Shon Boney passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 8 at age 52 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Shon was born to Stan and Penny (King) Boney in La Mesa, California, on November 9, 1968. He graduated from Grossmont High School in 1986, where he excelled athletically and academically. He was an avid skier, racing for Mammoth Mountain Ski Team. He also played baseball at the national level and went on to play for UCLA after high school.

On February 27, 1993, Shon was married to Heather Ryan. Over the next ten years, they welcomed the births of three beautiful daughters. Shon enjoyed mountain biking, spending time with his family, and traveling with family and friends, especially snow skiing in Utah and summer houseboating at Lake Powell.

Shon was the grandson of Henry Boney, who founded Boney’s Marketplace (later named Henry’s) in San Diego. Shon joined the Boney’s staff in 1986 and learned all areas of the business. After Henry’s was sold, Shon moved to Arizona, and co-founded Sprouts Farmers Market, which grew from one store in Chandler into one of the leading healthy

grocery store chains in the country. He served as Sprouts CEO for ten years, and then as a member of the Board of Directors until he retired in June 2019.

Flying was Shon’s passion. He became a pilot at age 16, earning various pilot ratings from single prop planes to solo piloting multi engine jets. He was particularly proud of his work flying cancer patients and veterans to and from medical treatments around the country.

Shon was an amazing husband, father, son, and friend. He was a devoted dad who rarely missed his girls’ soccer games, cheer competitions, and ski races, no matter the distance. His generosity was unmatched, and his passion for a full, active life was infectious. Shon maintained a positive attitude throughout his illness, and he will be dearly missed. His kind and humble spirit will live on in the legacy of his family and friends.

Shon is survived by his wife of 28 years, Heather (Ryan), and their three daughters, Sydney (25), Brooke (23), and Megan (17); his sister Missy (Boney) Benker; and his parents, Stan and Penny Boney. Shon was delighted to see his eldest daughter Sydney recently become engaged to Jack Dymand.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at Secret Hills Ranch in Alpine, California. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of Shon’s favorite charities: challengecenter.org, veteransairlift.org or angelflightwest.org
