Thomas Carter Bache, III

SAN DIEGO — Age 48 left this world as he slept peacefully in the early morning of March 15, 2021. Born on June 8, 1972, in San Diego, where he spent most of his life. Tom was proud of his decade of service in the Marine Corps, including leading an infantry squad in the invasion and rapid victory in the 2003 Iraq War. He was a champion distance runner when at the University of San Diego High School (San Diego CIF champion in cross-country and track and school record-holder). He was inducted into the University Hs/cathedral Catholic HS Athletic Hall of Fame. He became a pillar of the San Diego running community as a master-level USTAF official, training partner, mentor, and inspiring competitor (he ran a 2:42 marathon at age 47 and finished high in several mountainou­s ultra-marathons).

He officiated at countless meets at levels from high school to internatio­nal. He competed for San Diego Track Club (SDTC) and served as an SDTC and USTAF Board Member and Officer.

Tom had a gift for making, keeping, and inspiring friends. He organized and led numerous mountain runs and backpackin­g adventures. His friendly presence enriched countless lives, and he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his parents, Lolitia B. Bache and Thomas Carter Bache, Jr (Ann Kerr) and their son, David; sister, Kristin Markowicz (John) and their children, John, Joseph, James, and Jane; sister, Stephanie Bache (Mark Simon) and their daughter, Marlo.
