Edward Spilkin, MD

EL CAJON, CA —

Dr. Edward Spilkin passed away recovering from cervical surgery at Sharp Memorial, San Diego. Dr. Spilkin leaves his beloved wife of 44+ years, Vicki, and his children Alan (Monica), Stewart (Cheri), Bradley (Amy), and Bradford (Shulamit).

Dr. Spilkin was born in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from Central High School. He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for his BA degree in History (1960) and then went on to UM Medical School training as an Internist and a Nephrologist. He was in the Berry Plan for physicians during Vietnam and was able to continue his training before reporting to Edwards Air Force Base in 1969 as an Air Force Major.

In 1971, Dr. Spilkin moved his family with his first wife, Lynne, from Edwards AFB to San Diego to begin an internal medicine practice. He was hired by UCSD Medical

School to establish a Dialysis Unit at the new Veteran’s Hospital in La Jolla. Dr. Spilkin went on to join Grossmont Internal Medical Group and then Balboa Nephrology Group before retiring.

In retirement, Ed found places to volunteer. He delivered Meals for Jewish Family Service and used his medical knowledge with Volunteers in Medicine. Temple Emanuel became his second home, where he was on the Board of Directors and many of their committees. He joined American Association of University Women (once men were

allowed to join) which provides higher education opportunities to women and girls.

Ed had many interests. Sports was a BIG one. He loved his University of Michigan Wolverines (Go Blue) and had season tickets to the San Diego Padres off and on over many years.

He also became an SDSU Aztec fan - plus he was a former San Diego Charger fan. He read a variety of novels and belonged to two book clubs. He went to Torah Study on Saturday mornings at Temple Emanu-el. He worked out at 24 Hour Fitness 3x/week before Covid. He belonged to a long-standing Monday Lunch Men’s Group.

Ed and Vicki traveled far and wide when they were younger. Then, as old age approached, they stayed closer to home: cruising on the Mississippi River, Cuba, and finally taking the Panama Canal trip from Ft. Lauderdale to San Diego that they were saving for when they were old. Their travel buddies from Seattle, Eugene, and Miami met in Africa in 1995 and have many memories of wonderful adventures.

Ed enjoyed life, and his love for his family and the joy they brought into his life was his greatest gift. He leaves his brother Larry (Susann) and sister Margo (Ken) Sanders. Also, his five beloved grandchildren: Ary, Nathaniel, Claire, Lia, and Ella. He was blessed with nieces Sandy, Sweigh, Marla, and nephews Andy, Noah, Eli, Jaime, and Colin. Also, Vicki’s mother, Flora “Carol” Hoffman, has been close to the family since Vicki’s father passed away. Lastly, Vicki’s two brothers, Josh (Joanne) Hoffman and Brad (Elizabeth) Hoffman, rounded out Ed’s large family.
