BROTHER-SIS RECORD?
Star quarterbacks and kickers don’t normally bear hug the way Mt. Miguel’s did after a PAT kick Friday night.
This, however, was special … one for the family photo album. Julianna Laverdiere, a junior concurrently playing on the girls’ soccer team, easily made good on her first career PAT attempt to give the Matadors their 29th point in a 29-24 win over Valhalla. Julianna’s brother Jacob scored the first 28 points Friday.
“I guarantee you that’s got to be a state record,” said Mt. Miguel coach Troy Starr. “Most combined points by a brother and sister.” Jacob has thrown for 6,256 yards and 59 TDS in 21 games the past two seasons. This year, he has transformed into a running QB and recruiter.
He had a school record 37 carries for 172 yards and four TDS against Valhalla, plus a pair of 2-point conversions. Last week, he had 26 carries for 206 yards and two TDS. Weeks before, “in desperate need for a kicker,” Starr instructed his star QB to invite Julianna to join the football team.
“Jacob was kind of told to bring her along this year,” Starr said. The rest is family history.

Madison 39, Patrick Henry 37 (2 OT): In perhaps the best game of the young season, Madison’s Daveion White scored on a 2-point PAT in the second overtime to give the Warhawks the win. Joelauni Raguro caught a TD pass from White on the last play of regulation to send the game into OT.
La Jolla 51, Mira Mesa 14: La Jolla QB Jackson Stratton and WR Diego Solis hooked up for a pair of TDS. Stratton completed 19 of 30 passes for 301 yards and 4 TDS and rushed 4 times for 33 yards and a score.
Coronado 7, University City 6: scoreless game through three quarters, University City scored in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard a pass from Ikaika Bell to Curtis Whitehurst, but failed on a 2-point PAT try. Coronado scored late in the fourth quarter and made the PAT to get the win.
Crawford 33, Hoover 0: Hamadi Sharif had 150 yards rushing, a TD reception and an interception for Crawford. QB Kevin Luong had a pair of TD passes for the Colts.
San Diego 20, Christian 18: San Diego QB Jadon Green had 103 yards total offense, throwing for a score and rushing for another.
No. 4 Carlsbad 49, San Marcos 9: Carlsbad QB Aiden Sayin threw a pair of TD passes — both to Tyler Nolte — and ran 42 yards for a score. Julian Sayin, Aiden’s freshman brother, threw an 11-yard TD pass to Mazlo Norwood.
Torrey Pines 24, No. 7 El Camino 13: Down 13-10 at the half, Torry Pines got a second-half TD from Griffin Grant — on a 52-yard pass from Mo Vanderweil — and put the game away moments later on a run by Marco Notarainni, who rushed 16 times for 106 yards and a pair of TDS.
La Costa Canyon 17, No. 8 Oceanside 16: Sophomore QB Conner

Annicharico, starting his first varsity game, engineered the upset, throwing for 125 yards with TDS to Nick Swarte and Tyler Johnson.
Santa Fe Christian 35, Tri-city Christian 23: SFC RB Stephen Britton had 273 all-purpose yards, rushing 24 times for 205 yards and 4 TDS. QB Thomas Greupner threw for 69 yards and ran for 101 and a score.
Orange Glen 30, Classical Academy 24: OG QB Dennis Andrew completed 13 of 24 passes for 252 yards and 3 TDS. Malachi Keels caught 4 of those passes for 70 yards while Da’ron Reeves had 3 receptions for 133 yards and a TD.
La Jolla Country Day 24, Mtn. Empire 7: Matthew Davis caught a TD pass and ran for another score for LJCD. Bito Bass-sulpizio threw a TD pass to Daniel Rosenberg and Jaden Mangini had a TD run.
Bishop’s 27, Francis Parker 16: Bishop’s got a pair of TD runs from Christian Nava, one for 73 yards. QB Gervy Alota threw for 118 yards and a TD. Ben Effress had a TD run.
Maranatha 44, Hamilton, Ariz., 6: Maranatha ran its record to 2-0 with an easy win.
Army-navy 14, Escondido Charter 7: ANA opened its season with a hard-fought win over the White Tigers.
Valley Center 17, Escondido 14: Valley Center QB Ethan Villalobos ran for a TD and threw for another while RB Colton Crossley rushed 34 times for 134 yards for the ninth straight win over the Cougars.
Vista 35, Mt. Carmel 14: Sundevils QB Casey Taumoepeau was 8 for 17 passing for 150 yards and 2 TDS. He also rushed for 38 yards on 5 carries. Dakota Landry led Mt. Carmel defense with 11 tackles.
Rancho Bernardo 43, Del Norte 13: Trailing 13-7 after the first quarter, Rancho Bernardo scored the next 36 points while the defense held Del Norte to 47 rushing yards on 23 carries.
San Pasqual 21, Rancho Buena Vista 6: San Pasqual’s Danny Davis rushed 11 times for 111 yards and a TD as well as having three tackles on defense. The Eagles limited RBV to 128 total yards.
Castle Park 54, San Ysidro 16: Eric Hernandez rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns while fullback Ramon Cabal added 100 yards, scoring once on offense and once on defense with a fumble recovery.
Eastlake 55, Bonita Vista 3: Freshman Johnny Limon made his case for the starting job by completing 5 of 6 passes for 50 yards and touchdown strikes of 15 and 10 yards to Jordan Blondin.
No. 5 Mater Dei Catholic 39, Montgomery 0: Darren Barkins took the opening kickoff back 85 yards and later caught a 26-yard TD pass from Trevor Appelman. Appelman also had scoring passes to Surahz Buncom for 55 yards and David Jazo for 19.
Sweetwater 22, El Cajon Valley 6: QB Mario Villa and junior RB Carlos Hopper led a Red Devils rushing attack that amassed 277 yards. Villa had 128 yards on 19 carries, scoring 3 TDS, while Hopper added 100 yards on 15 carries.
Olympian 54, Chula Vista 14: Tai Manalo rushed 4 yards for one score, caught a 25-yard pass for a second and ran an interception back 90 yards for a third TD, all in the first quarter, to lead the Eagles to the season-opening win. He added a 90-yard kickoff return.
Otay Ranch 39, Hilltop 0: Otay Ranch, which will battle Mater Dei Catholic on Thursday night, was impressive, shutting out host Hilltop.
Poway 35, Westview 14: Vance Jefferson caught a pair of TD passes for Mt. Carmel. Senior Dakota Landry had 19 tackles, including 11 solo stops.
Ramona 45, Fallbrook 6: Making his first varsity start, QB Devion Sobczak completed all 10 of his passes for 186 yards and 4 TDS. Do-everything player Cameron Dingman had a pair of TD receptions, one for 57 yards.
No. 9 Granite Hills 20, No. 10 Grossmont 7: Joaquin Thomas scored on a 76-yard run and an 89-yard pass from Justus Mccomb to lift Granite Hills. Mccomb, who was 10 of 20, threw for 206 yards and 2 TDS.
Santana 42, El Capitan 7: Drew Temple was 14-of-30 passing for 261 yards and 4 TDS to lead Santana. Jared Forster had 5 receptions for 99 yards and 3 TDS and James Beeson added 5 catches for 124 yards. Both had interceptions.
Monte Vista 36, West Hills 6: Lamonta Jenkins rushed 18 times for 135 yards and a TD for Monte Vista. Deron Whitley added 9 carries for 93 yards and 3 TDS.
Helix 14, Steele Canyon 0: Helix used 3 interceptions, two by Hunter Wiggins, another by Joshua Carroll, and 4 fumble recoveries to shut out the Cougars.
Brawley 26, Imperial 6: Isaiah Young scored on runs of 60, 4 and 10 yards to lead Brawley. Daniel Camillo opened the game with an 85-yard kickoff return TD.
Central 34, Vincent Memorial 0: Jordan Reed was 15-of-26 passing for 260 yards and 3 TDS and a rushing TD to lead Central.
