Pete Slaughter

December 10, 1953 - March 30, 2021

SAN DIEGO — Pete epitomized what it is to be a San Diegan, from growing up at his dad’s boat yard on Shelter Island to rooting on his alma mater at SDSU basketball games, to enjoying life and real estate on Coronado Island. His joy for this city and his friends and family that live here was infectious.

Pete was born in Point Loma in 1953, the fourth child of Betty Slaughter Harriman and Jim Slaughter. Growing up, Pete learned valuable lessons in perseverance from his dad, who ran the boat yard from one of the first motorized wheelchairs as he battled Polio. Pete summoned this courage when fighting his own battle with cancer, noting it was “a minor inconvenience” compared to what his dad endured.

Pete’s love for the water and for interacting with people continued after graduating from SDSU, when he took positions at both Coronado Yacht Club and Southwestern Yacht Club as general manager, the latter of which gave him the opportunity to oversee the Louis Vuitton Cup.

For the past 19 years, Pete was a well-known fixture in the Coronado community, where he was a realtor with his partner Paulette. Much like Pete, his dog Newport, was just as well known for greeting everyone he met with a smile. Both were instantly loved by anyone who met them, and they rarely left each other’s sides.

The past few months, Pete was able to spend valuable time with his family, living with his son Mike and daughter-in-law

Brittany, at their new house in Escondido. There he was able to enjoy sunny afternoons on the deck, jamming out to his favorites from the 60s and 70s-bob Dylan, Van Morrison and The Rolling Stones- while also playing with his granddaughter Emilia, who enjoyed wearing “Papa Pete’s” hats, and most recently, getting to meet his newest granddaughter, Juliette.

Pete is survived by his 19-year mate and business partner, Paulette Fennello, brother Steve Slaughter and his partner Linda Osborne, brother David Slaughter and his wife Kay, sister Lynn Artale and her husband John, ex-wife and mother of his children Lindi Slaughter, son Michael Slaughter and his wife Brittany and daughter Stephanie Slaughter.

Services will be announced at a later date in Coronado, when everyone is able to gather in celebration of Pete’s life. Donations can be made the Sharp Coronado Hospital or Much Love Animal Rescue (https:// www.muchlove.org)

Rest in peace Pete. You are so loved by everyone that met you, and your spirit will live on in all of us.
