Morse High hung 58 points on Christian last season and Christian first-year coach Danny Mitchell wasn’t sure the Tigers wouldn’t do the same Friday.

But Mitchell’s Patriots held Oregonbound running back Byron Cardwell in check and came away with a 17-6 win.

“Christian Akridge was the spy assigned to stay with Cardwell everywhere he went, and Chris did a fantastic job on a great player,” Mitchell said. “Plus Chris caught eight passes.”

Patriots quarterback Gabe Krug, who missed part of last week’s game with back spasms, threw TD passes to Hunter Provience and Joey Merritt and rushed for a TD.

Krug, however, broke his collarbone on the last play of the game, landing awkwardly while trying to run out the clock.

“So sophomore Jake Davila’s our guy now,” Mitchell said. “We’ve lost eight senior players this season, but we have a great sophomore class, including Davila, Merritt, Provience and Akridge.”
