RECOMMENDED READS
Welcome to our literary circle, in which San Diegans pass the (printed) word on books
Kathleen Sullivan-long Job: Branch Manager, Solana Beach Branch, San Diego County Library She recommends: “Outside, Inside” by Leuyen Pham (Roaring Brook Press, 2021; 48 pages) Why? In her very special picture book, Caldecott Honor author and illustrator Leuyen Pham gently talks about our shared experiences when the whole world went inside due to COVID-19. In carefully chosen words, never mentioning the virus, Pham reminds readers of all that we have felt and experienced during the pandemic when the streets were empty and nature seemed to take over. Her detailed illustrations depict front-line workers, drive-by birthdays and virtual school, families baking bread, making music and fretting over bills. Children will notice new details with every reading. Pham provides an authentic peek into the lives of everyday people during the pandemic, celebrates essential workers, and leaves readers with a message of hope and hugs in the future (grown-ups, grab a tissue!).
Mimi Hannan Job: Bookseller, La Playa Books She recommends: “The Windsor Knot” by SJ Bennett (William Morrow, 2021; 288 pages) Why? If you can’t get enough of “The Crown” and are in the mood for a lightweight distraction, pick up this charming mystery novel. An overnight guest at Windsor Castle is found dead under disturbing circumstances, and Her Majesty discreetly applies her smarts to find out whodunit. I am all in for this fictionalized version of the queen using her brilliant mind and 90 years of life experience to solve crimes with the help of her loyal staff. Seeds were planted for future books in the series, and I look forward to reading every one.
