-

SAN DIEGO, CA — Susan passed away unexpectedly at her home. She was a resident of Point Loma since the late 1960s. She was 88 years old.

Susan and her twin sister, Signy, were born in Iowa City, Iowa. They were the youngest twins to fly on United Airlines as infants in late 1933. Susan was a great-grandniece of acclaimed economist Thorstein Veblen. Susan’s father, Burl Bush, was a naval officer and an engineer with the Engineering Experiment Station in Annapolis, Maryland. Susan met her future husband, Peter Manx Moriarty, while living in Annapolis. They married in February, 1952 and lived on the west and east coasts with their five children while Peter served as a U.S. Navy pilot. Susan was widowed at the age of 40 and never remarried.

Susan enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother and a lifelong volunteer at her children’s schools, her church, and at local hospitals. She was a member of Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church since the early 1970s and volunteered as an usher and with the Rachel Circle, a women’s service project group. She volunteered at Sharp Cabrillo Hospital and Mary Birch Hospital for 34 years. At Sharp Cabrillo she gave her time for several decades and was President of the Auxiliary. When the hospital closed, she was welcomed by a new group of volunteers at Mary Birch.

A true dog and bird lover, she spoiled her winged and 4-legged friends. Her love of dogs brought her to the Rancho Bernardo Dog Park, where she and her dogs were welcomed.

Susan made friends wherever she went and will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity, wisdom, cookies, fudge, penuche frosting, and brownies.

She was predeceased by her husband, Peter; parents, Burl and Eloise Bush; twin sister, Signy Brown; and son-in-law, Phil Hack.

She is survived by her brother, Henry; children, Marcia (Brian) Karadashian, Jeffrey (Kathryn), Julie (Ron) Baham, Douglas (Linda), and Susan “Sudi” Hack; grandchildren, Erik, Samantha, Jonathon, Hilary, Emma, Sydney, and Kelly; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Priscilla, and Landon; and her beloved dog, Cooper.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 20, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church, 2128 Chatsworth Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92107.
