BOOMERS WINNING HOME BIDS
The Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors (PSAR) reports that baby boomers, who can tap equity gains, are winning instead of younger millennials in competitions for available homes for sale.. A Zillow report said home buyers ages 60 years and older grew 47 percent from 2009 to 2019, while buyers ages 18 to 39 fell by 13 percent. According to Ditas Yamane, 2021 PSAR president, “Younger first-time buyers have a steep hill to climb as they try to overcome rising prices while saving for a down payment and paying student debt. Repeat buyers have a builtin advantage because they can use the proceeds from the sale of the current home for all-cash offers.” Younger buyers are often bidding for their first home, said Yamane.
