Zack Colombo recently started a new job as director of estate and gift planning at San Diego Humane Society.

Colombo stepped into the new role in November, after serving for four years as director of philanthropy at the Humane Society. In that position, he built relationships with the Humane Society's "amazing community of supporters who make our lifesaving work possible,” he said.

As director of estate planning, Colombo will partner with animal lovers who are interested in leaving a gift in their will or trust to support the pets, wildlife and pet owners served by the Humane Society.

Most exciting thing about his new role: “My job is amazing, and I'm grateful to work where I do. I have a chance to interact with incredible people and animals, and to see the joy our donors have when they meet the animals they're helping and see the impact of our work firsthand. I've found that people who choose to leave legacy gifts to support San Diego Humane Society are generous, thoughtful and compassionate individuals. It's an absolute pleasure having the chance to work with them to make the world better for animals and the people who love them.”

One thing he’s learned about himself in the past year: “Much to my own surprise, I've discovered that I actually enjoy public speaking. However, I still get nervous doing it so, if possible, it helps to have my rescue pug, Penny, up there with me.”

One piece of career advice for others: “Make time for mentorship! If you're in a position to mentor others, make time to do it. If you're searching for career guidance or advice, seek out mentors at your organization or through your professional network. I owe so much to my mentors – I wouldn't be in this role without them.”
