December 27, 1922 - December 27, 2022

-

SAN DIEGO — Ruth A. Sewell always said, “I want to make it to 100.” Well, she did just that. On December 27, 2022, the morning of her 100th birthday, she passed away peacefully in the home she lived in for almost 50 years.

Ruth was born in Horton, Kansas, received her R.N. degree from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO, a B.S. at Arizona State and her Masters at U.S.D.

She was a school nurse for the San Diego Unified School District. For 10 years prior to Dana’s closing, she served there with several of its feeder schools. Her last assignment was ten years at Mission Bay High School. She started her travel adventures during her summer breaks and traveled to all parts of the world.

A true adventurer, she went sky diving on her 85th birthday. When not traveling, Ruth was very involved with The Peninsula Woman’s Club, Point Loma Garden Club, Senior Olympics, San Diego Historical Society, The Red Hat Society and several volunteer organizations. She ate ice cream and chocolate often, and one of her final statements was, “There’s always time for chocolate.”

She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Rick Sewell of San Diego, and her oldest daughter, Gayle Sewell Harnest of Virginia. She is survived by her daughter Gloria Sewell Spain of Texas, her son Rodd Sewell of San Diego, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Her body has been donated to the University of California San Diego Medical Center. Upon completion of studies, her body will be cremated, and her ashes scattered at sea.

Memorial donations may be sent to Father Joe’s Villages, 3350 E St. San Diego, CA 92102 or Friends of Famosa Slough, 4285 W Point Loma Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107.

A memorial mass will be held March 3, 2023, at 1130, at Sacred Heart Church in Ocean Beach, 4776 Saratoga Ave, San Diego, CA 92107.
