SAN DIEGO — Ione was born on a farm near Starkweath­er, North Dakota to Norwegian emigrant parents, Thorben & Laura Schoneberg. Her early education was at country schools in Benson and Ramsey counties, North Dakota, with graduation from Central High School, Devils Lake, in 1941. She received a BA in English from San Diego State University in 1976.

Ione was very proud of her Norwegian heritage; nonetheles­s, she married a Swede, Lloyd Allen (originally Johannson) at First Lutheran Church, Seattle, WA on January 13, 1945.

Before settling in San Diego in 1961 after her husband’s retirement from the US Navy, Ione travelled with her family to various duty stations including NAS Moffett Field (San Francisco, CA); NAS Jacksonvil­le, FL; NAS Quonset Point (Wakefield, RI); Westover AFB (Springfiel­d, MA); Maguire AFB / Fort Dix, NJ; NAS Ream Field (Imperial Beach, CA) and NAS Pt Mugu, CA.

After settling in San Diego, Ione worked for General Dynamics and Logicon for many years.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Lloyd Allen, a son, Douglas Allen, both parents, a brother, Erling Schoneberg, and sisters Jeanette Bruick, Joyce Lunenschlo­ss and Sonia Skipper. Survivors include two sons and their families: Randall (Gail) Allen of Oak Hill, VA, and Steven Allen of San Diego; five grand children - Kevin, Cindy, Karen, Garrett & Jake; and eight great grand children - Lauren, Sarah, Kristen, Lilly, Myles, Kara, Colin & Sonja. Ione is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the US, Norway and Denmark.

Ione was a member of St James Lutheran Church, Imperial Beach, CA; Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Clairemont (San Diego) and most recently a member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Pacific Beach (San Diego).

Memorial services will be held at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1376 Felspar St, Pacific Beach, with interment with her husband at Miramar National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons may be made to St Paul’s Lutheran Church, a San Diego hospice or a charity of choice.
