CARLSBAD, CA — Joanne A. Kinghorn, 90, of Carlsbad, California, passed away on December 11, 2023, in Gresham, Oregon, surrounded by her loving family. Born November 26, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, she is the daughter of André and Lillian Bregand.

Joanne grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Redford High School. She then attended University of Michigan, earning a B.A. degree in Psychology and Math, along with a teaching credential. Joanne dedicated over 30 years to teaching in both primary and middle schools in the Carlsbad School District. Joanne’s influence extended beyond the classroom, impacting thousands of children not only as a revered teacher but also as a powerful role model and a nurturing parent-figure. Her dynamic teaching style and passion for education left an indelible mark on her students, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Joanne’s life was a testament to her devotion to others. She was married for 64 years to the love of her life, James M. Kinghorn (deceased) with whom she shared a deep commitment to family, friends, and the communities they served. Joanne was an active volunteer in various organizations including AAUW, Soroptimist, Family Counseling Service, Friends of the Library, PTAS, CHS Academic and Band Boosters, YMCA, Boy Scouts, and Camp Fire Girls.

Joanne and Jim cherished their time camping with family and friends across the USA, Mexico, and Canada, and also enjoyed travels abroad - making friends along the way. The beaches of Carlsbad, with their beautiful sunsets, remained their favorite place to relax and connect with loved ones.

Joanne is lovingly remembered by many and survived by her children: Lynn Bregandsmith, Scott Kinghorn, and Joanne Remillard; five grandchildren: Lauren and Rory; Jeff, Amanda, and Greg, and greatgrandchild Ezra.

In the words of Henry Brooks Adams, “Teachers affect eternity; no one can tell where their influence stops.” Joanne Kinghorn embodied this sentiment, leaving a legacy of inspiration and love that will endure through generations.
