Aztecs’ Lewis knows music, cigars and fast football

- BRYCE MILLER Columnist

Music threads a wild route through the personal and professional life of new San Diego State football coach Sean Lewis. First concert? Kenny Chesney at Soldier Field in Chicago. First album? Green Day.

As the 37-year-old navigates his day, he pivots from heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold to Drake.

One style offers a melodic clue, though.

“I run the gamut,” Lewis said. “But the staff knows or is learning that if they come in here at the end of the day and I’ve got jazz going, it’s positive vibes only. Don’t interrupt the jazz lounge that’s going on.

“That’s usually the way we button up the day.”

The dizzying variety of Lewis’ tune-choosing interests shows his unpredictable and adaptable nature. He’s a consider-everything guy. He’s an eyes-wideopen guy. He finds the beat, no matter the genre or situation.

The Aztecs are expected to hit hyper drive with Lewis, whose offensive rhythm — tweaked into something he’s calling “AZTECFAST” — could feel like an overcaffeinated Vivaldi concerto.

For a ground-and-pound program that lived between the tackles and breathed defense under Brady Hoke and Rocky Long, the Lewis era promises to be a blood-pumping toe tapper.

So who is the composer behind San Diego State’s new soundtrack?

Q:

What’s the best and worst part about being 6-foot-7? A:

The best part? Being able to dunk early, I guess. I dunked for the first time in eighth grade at Mcgugan Junior High in Oak Lawn, Ill.

Flights are tough. That’s the hardest part about being 6-7. That and low doorways. Your standard doorway is 6-8, so I duck no matter what because some doorways have taught me a hard lesson.
