Ice cream shops bring unique flavors to O’side

Ice cream maker Little Fox Cups and Cones is bringing a sweet touch to South Oceanside.

The shop is owned by Meghan Koll, who has worked in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years, including as a bartender in places like Carlsbad’s Jeune et Jolie restaurant.

During the pandemic, Koll fell into ice cream-making out of boredom. The first flavor she created used cold brew cream left over from a drink recipe she had entered in a national cocktail competition. The results were delicious.

Little Fox gained fans when Koll started selling her ice cream out of a drive thru at Viewpoint Brewing Co.

She soon added an ice cream “tricycle” that allowed her to provide frozen creations at special events and weddings. Eventually, Koll opened a popup window at the Thread Spun boutique in Leucadia.

Koll’s new shop in Oceanside, at 1940 South Freeman Street, is her first storefront. It offers nearly 20 rotating ice cream flavors made from scratch and available in scoops, ice cream flights and pints-to-go. Little Fox also sells treats like ice cream tacos and ice cream cakes.

“I think people really love the fact that our ice cream is so unique in its flavors,” Koll said. “They’re very different.”

Fan favorites include the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood made with toasted corn cream, honeycomb, and caramel drizzle, as well as the 24 Carrot Gold with caramelized carrot cream, hot honey, and hazelnut brittle.

Koll says she’s extremely grateful for her team and for the way the community has supported Little Fox. She cited several local businesses she works with, including Cyclops Farms, Necessity Coffee, D’aquisto Farms, Seas Greens Microgreens, Go Greens! and Corner Pizza.
