The San Diego Humane Society is offering several different camps for kids this summer, including some “virtual” camps during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The local nonprofit is offering in-person camp at its San Diego campus near the University of San Diego. It is also holding three themed in-person camps this summer: Career Camp, Farm Camp and Service Day Camp.

San Diego Humane’s first virtual Animal Adventure Camp allows kids going into second through fifth grades the opportunity to take part in online camps from home. The oneweek camps for kids began this week and are held via Zoom from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Upcoming camps will be July 20-24, July 27-31 and Aug. 3-7.

For those camps, which have two curricula (Animal Pals and Animal Helpers), a computer or “smart device” with Internet connection, camera and microphone will be needed. A supply box is provided and needs to be picked up from the Humane Society’s San Diego campus.

In-person adventure camps will rotate between different age groups and include one human educator and two teenage volunteers each week. Second- through fourth-graders can attend camps from July 20-24 and Aug. 3-7. Fifth- through eighth-graders can attend camp July 27-31.

Career Camp for teens going into 10th through 12th grades will be held on the San Diego campus from Aug. 4-6 and includes hands-on experience to help them look into a career with animals.

Farm Camp is for kids heading into second through fifth grades and will be held on the Escondido campus from Aug. 12-13 and will allow kids to meet farm animals and learn about their care.

The one-day Service Day Camp is for teens going into ninth through 12th grades and will be held at the San Diego campus on Aug. 14 and will allow teens to participate in service projects that benefit the San Diego Humane Society.

The San Diego campus is at 5500 Gaines St., Escondido’s is at 3500 Burnet Drive.
