MISS BOBA?
You’re in for a make-at-home treat
Instead of popping Champagne at my wedding, I toasted with boba.
The sweet treat transports me back home, not only to my parents’ California home, but also to Taiwan, my mom’s birthplace. Rather than going out for coffee, my favorite pastime is dropping in for boba at my favorite shop. It’s how I bond with family and friends.
I’m not alone. This year, boba — also known as bubble tea, tapioca tea or pearl milk tea — was added as a new official emoji.
Finding my favorite boba shop used to be a way of curing my homesickness whenever I’d move to a new city. I’d seek out shops that took the time to make their boba drinks the right way, brewing their tea from leaves and not powders, which can leave an artificial aftertaste.
