Alzheimer’s Association uses app for virtual 5K

At a time where it’s too risky to walk side-by-side with hundreds of strangers for a charity fundraiser, many local nonprofits are finding new ways to build comradery and raise funds through virtual 5k events.
This includes the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/ Imperial County chapter, which will host three virtual Walks to End Alzheimer’s this fall: The North County Walk on Saturdaysept. 26, the San Diego walk on Oct. 3 and the Imperial County walk on Nov. 7.
The Alzheimer’s Association is a national organization that supports Alzheimer’s disease and dementia treatment research, the search for a cure, classes to teach families how to care for those living with a dementia diagnosis, and support groups for those serving as caregivers for their loved ones. Much of the funding for the organization comes from it’s Longest Day fundraiser in June and through the annual walks hosted in cities across the country. Last year’s local walk drew more than 3,000 participants.
This year, the nonprofit is asking supporters to stick to small, safe teams to walk in their own neighborhoods or preferred hiking trails. Walkers can use the Walk to End Alzheimer’s mobile app to post photos, track their progress, listen to an event soundtrack and hear stories from celebrities who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. Those who raise at least $100 will receive a T-shirt by mail.
The local branch of the nonprofit has raised $230,000 through this year’s walk efforts so far, which will be used to support Alzheimer’s disease research and educational programs for family caregivers and those living with the disease throughout the nation.
“It helps fund our educational programs and services in San Diego and Imperial counties, funds the best research in the world to help find a cure, and supports advocacy on a state and federal level,” walk manager Sarah Granby said. “By participating in the walk, you are helping those who are dealing with it right now, as well as helping to find a cure so that in the future, other families don’t have to deal with it.”
