Man arrested, suspected of making hash oil after fire at Spring Valley home

-

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance after a butane hash oil lab in a Spring Valley home caught fire Wednesday night, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 7:35 p.m. at a home on Troy Street near Central Avenue, where authorities found what Drug Enforcement Administration spokeswoman Kameron Korte called a “largescale” butane hash oil lab.

She said the lab included commercial-grade equipment.

The DEA’s Narcotics Task Force seized roughly 100 pounds of processed marijuana and about 5 pounds of processed hash oil.

Hash oil — also known as honey oil, and often consumed in e-cigarettes and edible cannabis products such as cookies — is extracted from marijuana plants with the use of butane. The highly flammable gas makes the process dangerous, authorities say. Staff writer Alex Riggins contributed to this report. david.hernandez@sduniontribune.com

Deputies use Taser to arrest driver after chase, crash SAN DIEGO

Sheriff ’s deputies used a Taser during a struggle with a driver they said led them on a high-speed chase that began in the El Cajon area and ended in a crash in San Diego early Thursday.

The driver, a 53-year-old San Diparking ego man, was evaluated at a hospital before being booked into jail on suspicion of felony evading and resisting arrest, sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Portillo said.

He said the pursuit covered 15 miles and lasted 12 minutes.

It began when a deputy tried to pull over a vehicle after its driver ran a red light at the intersection of North Magnolia and East Bradley avenues in an unincorporated area just outside of El Cajon.

The driver didn’t stop, prompting a pursuit toward Santee, where the vehicle crashed into a center median at Halberns and Mast boulevards. The driver, however, kept going at high speeds, driving onto westbound state Route 52, Portillo said.

With a San Diego police helicopter overhead, California Highway Patrol officers laid down spike strips across the westbound lanes of SR-52 near Interstate 15. The driver kept going until the vehicle crashed into a guardrail on a southbound Interstate 805 on-ramp.

The driver tried to run away, but deputies caught up to him. They used a Taser to detain him “as he struggled with deputies,” Portillo said. david.hernandez@sduniontribune.com
