Fire burns vehicles, two structures in City Heights
SAN DIEGO
Flames scorched several vehicles and at least two structures Friday afternoon in a densely populated area of City Heights, fire authorities said.
It was not immediately clear what sparked the blaze, which erupted about 1:25 p.m. in the alley between Marlborough Avenue and 42nd Street between Landis and Dwight streets.
Flames first spread from a fifthwheel trailer to a Jeep, San Diego FireRescue Department Deputy Chief Steve Wright told OnScene TV.
From there, the fire spread to a nearby garage and the attic of a home, according to a Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman.
No injuries were reported, though a cat inhaled smoke and was being taken to a veterinarian, Wright told OnScene TV. The blaze displaced at least three residents.
Firefighters had to deal with a downed power line and a downed cable line, Wright said. He said it was not immediately known if the power line “or some other heat source” sparked the blaze.
Firefighters knocked down the f lames within about 20 minutes, according to the Fire-Rescue Department. Crews remained on scene as of 4 p.m. mopping up.

at the beach north of La Jolla over the late morning, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Neither described the shark’s behavior as aggressive.
As a precaution, lifeguards made public address announcements regarding the sightings, added extra patrols in a roughly one-mile perimeter in the area and posted warning signs along the beach, Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz said.
On Thursday, several juvenile white sharks were spotted swimming near surfers off Torrey Pines State Beach, north of the Scripps area.
The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. near Fairmount Avenue, according to the CHP online log. A traffic alert was issued a little more than five minutes later, and traffic backed up to College Avenue.
Callers reported that several vehicles had crashed, and that a man was on the freeway.
Authorities closed the three right lanes. A CHP spokesman said medics were tending to the person who reportedly jumped.
