DECHAMBEAU BLASTS HIS WAY TO 62 IN LAS VEGAS

-

Bryson DeChambeau put on another power display Thursday and it worked just as well as when he won the U.S. Open.

In his first start since winning at Winged Foot last month, DeChambeau had two-putt birdies on all three of the par 5s and two of the par 4s on his way to a 9-under 62 and a one-shot lead in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas.

It matched his career low, and that was all that disappointed him at TPC Summerlin. He knew his 15-foot eagle putt from the fringe on the par-5 ninth was for his best score on the PGA Tour.

Patrick Cantlay, a winner and twice the runner-up in his last three appearances in Las Vegas, did his best to catch him. Cantlay made a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a 63. His only blemish was a long three-putt bogey on the 14th.

Harold Varner III, Scott Harrington, Nate Lashley and Austin Cook also were at 63.

More golf

Brittany Lincicome and Kelly Tan each shot 3-under 67 in windy conditions at difficult Aronimink Golf Club to share the lead in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Newtown Square, Pa. Danielle Kang, Lydia Ko, Gabby Lopez, Carlota Ciganda and Linnea Strom were a stroke back.

Brooks Koepka is ready to get back to golf, announcing he will play next week in the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas.

• Tyrell Hatton is back in Europe and continued his strong form with a 6-under 66 to help set the first-round pace at the MMW PGA Championship in Virginia Water, England. He was tied for the lead with Justin Harding of South Africa and Adri Arnaus of Spain.

College basketball

Trying to rebound from a 9-23 season, USD has a challenging beginning to its 202021 WCC regular season basketball campaign, opening Dec. 31 at USF, followed by home games against BYU and Saint Mary’s. Those will be the only games the Toreros play against the Dons and Gaels; they will face every other WCC team twice in the WCC’s unbalanced, 16-game conference schedule.

USD is still putting together its nonconference schedule; for now the Toreros’ first game is Nov. 28 at home against Long Beach State. (Full USD schedule, page D5)

NHL

The Montreal Canadiens agreed to a seven-year contract extension with forward Josh Anderson. The contract that runs through the 2026-27 season has an average annual value of $5.5 million. The Chicago Blackhawks will not re-sign goaltender Corey Crawford in free agency, parting with a key member of its Stanley Cup-winning core and potentially signaling a more extensive rebuild for one of the NHL’s marquee franchises.

The New Jersey Devils placed veteran goaltender Cory Schneider on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying out the final two years of his contract. The Devils also acquired defenseman Ryan Murray from the Blue Jackets for a fifth-round pick in the 2021 draft.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Justin Williams is retiring after 19 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cup championships.
