SAN DIEGO

A car struck and killed a 29-year-old woman Thursday evening in the Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood in southeastern San Diego, police said.

It happened around 8:10 p.m. on Imperial Avenue north of Lisbon and 69th streets, in an area of the city bordering Lemon Grove, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.

The victim was walking across Imperial near Viewcrest Drive, not in a marked crosswalk, when she was struck by a 2005 Mercedes-Benz sedan, Heims said in a news release.

Police said the 52-year-old woman driving the car “did not see the pedestrian until the last moment” and was unable to avoid striking her.

The victim died at the scene. Traffic Division investigators did not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor, Heims said.

Thursday night, and one of the drivers was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, San Diego police said.

The crash happened about 11:15 p.m. at 32nd Street and Imperial Avenue, Officer Robert Heims said.

A 2007 Toyota Corolla broadsided a 2018 Honda Civic, Heims said. He said one of the two cars ran a red light, but did not specify which one.

A woman riding in the back of the Honda sustained a serious head injury and was taken to a hospital.

The 28-year-old man driving the Toyota was arrested on suspicion of DUI, Heims said.
