With the exception of the wildfire-interrupted season of 2007, St. Augustine High and Cathedral Catholic have played football every season in a rivalry that has become known as the Holy Bowl.

Last week, the Great American Rivalry Series honored seniors Malcolm Williams of St. Augustine and Dee’Shon Swafford of Cathedral Catholic with its GARS Scholar Athlete Award.

Recognized for their contributions in the classroom as well as on the field, Williams and Swafford will each receive a $500 scholarship and are eligible to become a member of the inaugural Great American Series Scholar Athlete Hall of Fame.

They are two of 144 nominees nationally.

Swafford, a 5-foot-10, 185pound defensive back, was a second-team All-CIF selection last season, finishing with 30 tackles and three interceptions. He’s a two-star recruit by 247Sports.

Williams, a 6-foot, 230pound inside linebacker, is a three-star recruit by 247Sports. He had 65 tackles and three sacks last season.

Both players are considered top small-college football recruits.

St. Augustine is scheduled to host Cathedral Catholic on Feb. 19 at San Diego Mesa College.

Coaching changes

Citing family responsibilities, Cameron Clark has resigned as boys basketball coach at Oceanside High. Clark compiled a 116-116 record including 17-11 last season, bringing stability to a program that had three coaches in two years before his appointment.

Clark, who will continue as a math teacher at Oceanside, was the head girls basketball coach for six seasons and was a boys basketball assistant before taking over as head coach. He has been at the school 19 years. Freshman coach Darius Pickett will take over in the interim as the Pirates open a search for a new coach.

Carlsbad will close applications for a head basketball coach Oct. 19. The position opened when Sam Eshelman resigned to take over as athletic director.

Santa Fe Christian has appointed Dan Carson head boys lacrosse coach. An attackman and team captain at Marymount University in Virginia, Carson spent the last five years as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy. He was the head coach at Grove City College in Virginia.

Baseball commitments

Cathedral Catholic junior right-handed pitcher Matthew Allen (UC Irvine) and Point Loma sophomore left-hander Duke Ekstrom (Vanderbilt) have made early verbal commitments. Ekstrom was named to the Perfect Game Underclass AllAmerican Game Top Prospect List.

• Carlsbad senior lefthander/outfielder Sam Hasegawa has committed to UC San Diego. Hasegawa is also a standout basketball player.
