HALL OF FAME TRAINER JONES DIES AT 76 IN DEL MAR

Hall of Fame trainer Gary Jones, who oversaw Hall of Fame horse Best Pal and 1986 older horse of the year Turkoman, died. He was 76.

Jones died Sunday at his home in Del Mar following a leng thy illness, Santa Anita off icials said Monday.

As the son of one of California’s all-time training greats, Jones was destined for a life at the racetrack. After an apprentice­ship under his father, Farrell “Wild Horse” Jones, the younger Jones took over the family’s Jones Stable in 1974. He took it to new heights, producing 104 stakes winners over the next 22 years.

Jones had 1,465 victories from 7,900 starters and career purse earnings of $52,672,611, according to Equibase. He retired in 1996 and was elected to racing ’s Hall of Fame in 2014.

Jones’ son, Marty, is a trainer in Southern California, who took over his father’s stable when Gary retired.

Gary Jones won 15 training titles on the Southern California circuit, including four at Santa Anita, where he ranks sixth all-time in victories with 576 and seventh in stakes victories with 72.

Jones won 17 stakes at Del Mar, including the inaugural Pacific Classic with Best Pal in 1991.

College football

Vanderbilt’s game at Missouri on Saturday has been postponed because COVID-19 issues have left the Commodores without enough players. The Southeaste­rn Conference announced the game has been tentativel­y reschedule­d for Dec. 12. It is the first SEC game reschedule­d due to COVID-19-related problems and the 28th FBS game overall to be postponed or canceled since Aug. 26.

Kansas State quarterbac­k Skylar Thompson will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his throwing shoulder, leaving freshman Will Howard to lead the No. 22 Wildcats the rest of the way.

Nebraska will play at Iowa on the day after Thanksgivi­ng, continuing a tradition that started when the Cornhusker­s joined the Big Ten in 2011. The Big Ten announced the game would be played Nov. 27 instead of Nov. 28.

NHL

Alex Pietrangel­o is Vegas-bound after eventually striking gold in free agency. Pietrangel­o agreed to terms with the Vegas Golden Knights on a $61.6 million, seven-year deal, according to a person with direct knowledge of the contract. Pietrangel­o will count $8.8 million against the salary cap through 2027.

Alexis Lafreniere isn’t going back to play junior hockey in Quebec, and the Rangers hope he’s on the ice in New York sooner than later. The Rangers agreed to terms with the No. 1 draft pick on his three-year, entrylevel contract.

• The Montreal Canadiens signed forward Tyler Toffoli to a four-year deal. The deal carries an average annual value of $4.25 million.

Tennis

French Open champion Iga Swiatek joined the top 20 for the first time by rising 37 spots in the WTA rankings to a career-best No. 17. Rafael Nadal’s 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Novak Djokovic on Sunday for a 13th championsh­ip at Roland Garros and 20th Grand Slam trophy in all — tying Roger Federer’s record for men — did not change the top of the ATP rankings.

• Stan Wawrinka saved three match points to achieve a comeback win over Dan Evans and reach the second round of the St. Petersburg (Russia) Open, after the tournament was disrupted by an unnamed player’s coronaviru­s case. Serving to stay in the match at 5-6 down in the second, Wawrinka gave Evans three chances to seal the match but saved them all and then won the second-set tiebreaker and deciding set to complete a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory.

Cameron Norrie managed a surprise win where his fellow British player Evans couldn’t. Norrie hit 16 aces on his way to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over the eighthseed­ed Taylor Fritz, a native of San Diego.

For the first time in seven years, the UConn and Notre Dame women’s basketball teams won’t play in the regular season. The schools announced that the game was postponed because the Irish need to restructur­e their schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charlie Moore, the 400meter hurdles champion at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, died. He was 91.
