FALLBROOK

Federal investigators on Tuesday asked for help from the public to identify a thief who used a demand note to commit a robbery at a Fallbrook bank on Halloween.

The incident took place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chase Bank in a shopping center on South Mission Road, according to an FBI news release.

The man wore dark sunglasses and a dark ballcap during the robbery, but when he first walked in, the bottom of his face was exposed and visible to surveillance cameras — even though the bank (and nearly all businesses in the county) required everyone to wear face coverings because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a teller told the man he needed a face covering to enter, he stepped outside for a moment and then came back wearing one. Surveillance images show him still wearing the sunglasses after donning a black mask.

He stepped up to a counter and wrote on a deposit slip. He then approached a teller and showed a note that read, in part: “Don’t do any sudden movements. Just read the note.”

After the teller passed over cash, the thief walked out, limping.

The FBI described the thief as White or Latino, in his late 30s to early 40s with graying hair and gray stubble on his face. He appeared to weigh about 160 pounds and stood about 5 feet, 10 inches tall.

During the incident, he wore a black hoodie and black sweats, dark shoes, a black baseball hat, black sunglasses and — eventually — a black face covering.

Anyone with information regarding the man’s identity was asked to call the San Diego FBI at (858) 320-1800 or go to https://tips.f bi.gov.

Anonymous tips can be left by calling San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477, or going to sdcrimestoppers.org.
