Man, 20, arrested in fatal stabbing in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of another young man found on a Chula Vista street Friday night.

Raymundo Ochoa-Juarez was arrested with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force on Monday afternoon while walking on Madison Avenue near I Street, said Chula Vista police Lt. Miriam Foxx.

He is being held without bail on suspicion of murder.

Foxx said police were responding to a call about a party when they were flagged down and directed to East Oxford Street where a fight reportedly had occurred. When officers arrived, they found the two on the ground, Foxx said.

The two stabbing victims were transporte­d to the hospital. The man who died was identified as Deandre Bethel, 20. The second victim, a 21year-old man, was hospitaliz­ed but is expected to recover, Foxx said.

Balboa Park police outpost hit with vandalism, burned

BALBOA PARK

Vandals struck a San Diego police storefront in Balboa Park on Tuesday, scrawling anti-police messages and setting off an incendiary device.

Police learned of the incident, at the storefront along Sixth Avenue by Redwood Street, about 1:30 p.m., Sg t. Matthew Botkin said.

They arrived to find charring and burning outside the door, and also a broken window.

Driver killed in crash on I-5 near Camp Pendleton

NORTH COUNTY

A motorist was killed in a fiery, solovehicl­e crash on Interstate 5 north of Camp Pendleton on Monday night, authoritie­s said.

The crash was reported around 8:40 p.m. on northbound I-5 south of Basilone Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.

A man was driving an SUV north on the highway at about 70 mph when, for unknown reasons, the SUV veered off the roadway and down into a drainage culvert, where it crashed and caught fire, Latulippe said.

Firefighte­rs responded to the scene and extinguish­ed the f lames. The unidentifi­ed driver died before he could be taken to a hospital.

S.D. police investigat­ing after armed robbers hit 2 businesses

SAN DIEGO

Detectives were investigat­ing two armed robberies Tuesday morning, one at a Bay Park gas station and one at a Mission Valley hotel, police said.

The first robbery was reported around 2:40 a.m. at the Shell gas station on the corner of Clairemont Drive and Denver Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.

A gas station employee had just returned from taking out the trash when two men walked up and pulled open a set of doors before the employee could lock them, Buttle said.

Both men had handguns and demanded money from the employee, the officer said. When the employee told them he didn’t have any money, one of the men pistol-whipped him in the head.

The pair f led the store and were last seen heading north on Denver Street.

A second robbery was reported around 3 a.m. at a hotel on Hotel Circle Place, off Hotel Circle North west of Fashion Valley Road, Buttle said.

Two armed men entered the lobby and left with a cash register, he said.

Man, 39, arrested, accused of throwing rocks at officer

OCEANSIDE

A 39-year-old man suspected of stealing cigarettes from an Oceanside drug store was arrested Saturday night after allegedly throwing rocks at a police car and at an officer.

Police were called shortly before 10:30 p.m. after a man jumped a counter in a Walgreens drug store on Mission Avenue and stole cigarettes. An officer responding to the call spotted a man matching the thief ’s descriptio­n, police said.

As the officer drove past, the man picked up a rock and threw it at the patrol car, hitting the car near its rear passenger window. When the officer got out of his car, the man threw another rock, narrowly missing the officer.

Police tackled the man and arrested him on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and assault on an officer.
