PERDOMO DFA’D IN ROSTER SHUFFLE
Pitcher Luis Perdomo’s time with the Padres could be coming to an end.
Pitchers Reggie Lawson and Mason Thompson and infielder Tucupita Marcano will continue with the organization.
Perdomo was designated for assignment on Friday while the three minor leaguers were added to the 40-man roster.
That protects other teams from selecting Lawson, Thompson or Marcano in next month’s Rule 5 draft. It leaves outfielders Tirso Ornelas and Esteury Ruiz, pitchers Pedro Avila and infielders Luis Almanzar, Jordy Barley, Justin Lopez and Eguy Rosario among those available for poaching.
Marcano is the Padres’ eighth-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. Lawson is ranked 10th. Among the organization’s top 30 prospects left unprotected were Ornelas (17), Ruiz (19), Avila (26), Rosario (28) and Barley (29).
Perdomo, a 27-year-old right-hander who has worked primarily as a reliever the past two years, will miss 2021 after having Tommy John surgery last month. He could still be re-signed by the Padres. They have 10 days to trade him or place him on waivers. Should he clear waivers, he could sign a minor-league deal with the Padres.
Perdomo has appeared in 133 games, 61 of them starts, and posted a 5.19 ERA in four seasons with the Padres.
