SANTEE

Santee is celebrating the big 4-0 today.

The city is showing the sweet side of four decades of incorporation by partnering with more than 17 local shops in town to offer free desserts all day — as long as supplies last — as part of the city’s “Santee Sweet Treat Stops,” and then topping the party off with two fireworks shows set to music.

“Forty years ago, informal leaders of the Santee community banded together to create an incorporated city,” Santee Mayor John Minto said. “It was imperative for them to have local control of the destiny for their citizens. Forty years later, the leadership of Santee is still fighting for local control, to make sure residents of Santee have all the amenities they need so they don’t have to leave their community.”

Santee residents won’t have to travel far for the treats. Participating shops will start as early as 9 a.m. Handing out the sweets will be: Bagel & Donut Bar (6 a.m. to 8 p.m.), Bowls N Brews (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), Dairy Queen (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.), Eccentric International Chefs (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), Go Get Yogurt (11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.), Kravings Fruit Bar (10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.), NatSweets (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and The Cupcake Store (10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

The city of Santee will be contributing to the carbohydrate binge, setting up a drive-thru at City Hall from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 10601 N. Magnolia Ave. Staffers will dole out gourmet treats handcrafted by Lantern Crest’s executive chef Mario Esparza and baklava from Baklava King Inc.

The 40th birthday party will culminate with a socially distant live dual fireworks display set to a choreographed soundtrack at 7 p.m. from Town Center Community Park and West Hills Park.

Because of COVID-19 concerns, the parks and parking lots will be closed for the event, and residents are encouraged to watch in a safe manner from their homes, yards or elsewhere nearby, keeping pets inside.
