No. 8 Michigan State knocks off No. 6 Duke 75-69.

Rocket Watts scored 20 points and Julius Marble had a career-high 12 to help No. 8 Michigan State beat No. 6 Duke 75-69 on Tuesday night in the Champions Classic.

The Spartans (3-0) closed the first half with a 13-4 surge to take a 37-33 lead at halftime. They maintained control in the second half with a balanced offense to go with their aggressive defense and rebounding.

“They are able to play at a consistent­ly higher level than us due to their depth right now,“Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

The Blue Devils (1-1) led 13-3 before struggling to make shots or get stops. Duke shot just 32 percent from the field and allowed five Spartans to score in double figures.

“At the end of the half, I thought we got a little fatigued, I guess tired, and they took that lead,” Krzyzewski said. “Then at the start of the second half,

we didn’t meet their level of intensity like we should.”

Aaron Henry had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks for the Spartans.

“We rode him like a horse,” coach Tom Izzo.

Joey Hauser had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Malik Hall added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Michigan State.

Matthew Hurt had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Duke, but freshman Jalen Johnson was limited to 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting after scoring 24 in his college debut. Jaemyn Brakefield scored 11 and Jordan Goldwire had 10 points for the Blue Devils.

Izzo improved his coaching record to 3-12 against the Blue Devils.

It was also the Spartans’ first win at Duke, which didn’t have its raucous fans at Cameron Indoor Stadium

due to the coronaviru­s pandemic.

over Green Bay in Phoenix coach Will Ryan’s return to Madison.

No. 7 Kansas 65, No. 20 Kentucky 62: Jalen Wilson scored 23 points and Ochai Agbaji added 17 as Kansas (2-1) topped Kentucky (1-2) in the State Farms Champions Classic in Indianapol­is.

No. 9 Creighton 94, Omaha 67: Christian Bishop scored 18 points to lead six Creighton players in double figures and the host Bluejays (2-0) routed Omaha (1-3).

No. 12 Villanova 87, Hartford 53: Justin Moore led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points and Villanova (3-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season to rout Hartford (0-2). The Wildcats shot 52 percent from the f loor in the Roman Legends Classic in Uncasville, Conn.

No. 14 North Carolina 67, Stanford 63: Leaky Black had a big driving basket at the 1:02 mark followed by a clinching free throw with 5.5 seconds left to help North Carolina (3-0) hold off Stanford (1-1) in the semifinals at the relocated Maui Invitation­al in Asheville, N.C.

No. 17 Texas, 66, Indians 44: Matt Coleman III scored 16 points to help Texas (3-0) beat Indiana (2-1) in the semifinals of the Maui Invitation­al.

West

Alabama 86, UNLV 74: John Petty Jr. scored 22 points, Jahvon Quinerly added 19 points and Alabama (2-1) beat UNLV (0-3) in the consolatio­n bracket of the Maui Invitation­al.

USC 79, BYU 53: Drew Peterson scored 19 points, brothers Evan Mobley and Isaiah Mobley each had a double-double, and USC (3-0) beat BYU (3-1) in the first game of the Roman Legends Classic.

UC Riverside 57, Washington 42: Jock Perry scored 21 points, Arinze Chidom had eight points and 12 rebounds and UC Riverside (1-1) beat Washing ton (0-2) in Las Vegas for coach Mike Magpayo’s f irst victory. Magpayo is the first NCAA Division I head coach of full Asian heritage.

Saint Mary's 73, Nicholls 50: Alex Ducas hit five 3pointers and scored 19 points to lead Saint Mary’s (3-1) to a home win over Nicholls (2-3). Dan Fotu and Kyle Bowen had 10 each for the Gaels.
