Series history: SDSU won the only previous meeting 118-35 at Viejas Arena in 2013.

Firebirds update: They opened their first season as a fullfledged NAIA member with an 81-70 win against San Diego Christian on Nov. 6. (NAIA was allowed to begin practice and open the season earlier than NCAA.) They went three weeks before playing again, lopsided exhibition losses at Div. I Southern Utah and UC Santa Barbara. They’re on the small side, with a starting lineup of 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, 6-5 and 6-6, and no one on the roster over 6-7. The team’s strength is in the backcourt, with Joe Robinson Jr. and Maurice Woods both scoring 19 in the win against SDCC. Woods missed the last two games with an injury and is questionable for today. Most of the roster is from California (none from San Diego high schools) but there are players from Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Georgia.

Aztecs update: This is the first of two games in a week’s time replacing the Mountain West series against Colorado State that were postponed. Instead of playing NAIA San Diego Christian on Friday, the Aztecs will host Pepperdine on Sunday afternoon. Despite convincing wins against then-No. 22 UCLA and Big West preseason favorite UC Irvine, coach Brian Dutcher said he found several areas for improvement on film for improvement — in particular, ball screen defense and more offensive precision. The only member of the roster to have faced Saint Katherine is grad transfer Terrell Gomez, last season with CSUN. Gomez made five 3-pointers and had 25 points in a 109-75 win. The Aztecs are 16-1 in their last 17 games at Viejas Arena and have won 11 straight in the month of November.
