ANDERSON WINS S.D. SUPERVISOR SEAT
Former senator defeats Vaus; Trotter wins in Santee race by 5 votes
With the vote count completed and cer tif ied Thursday in San Diego County, former state Sen. Joel Anderson has won the remaining county super visor seat.
The Reg istrar of Voters repor ted that Anderson defeated fellow Republican and Poway
Mayor Steve Vaus by 282 votes, or less than 0.1 percent of votes cast.
Anderson overcame an Election Day def icit of more than 4,000 votes. He will become the next supervisor for District 2, which includes El Cajon, L a Mesa, Lemon Grove, Poway, Santee and unincorporated areas.
“Thank you East County for the honor to ser ve you,” Anderson wrote on Facebook Thursday. “I look for ward to working with each of you to make our community the best!”
When asked if he would seek a recount, Vaus said he is “considering his options.”
Anderson’s victor y carries sig nif icant implications for the reg ion, especially for East County residents. They will be represented by someone other than Dianne Jacob for the f irst time in 28 years. Jacob is leaving off ice at the end of the year because of term limits. She had endorsed Vaus.
Although Vaus and Anderson share a par ty aff iliation, they presented themselves differently to voters. Vaus ran as a moderate; Anderson ran as a Trump Republican.
Anderson is a long time Alpine resident. As a state leg islator, he represented a large por tion of the district from 2007 to 2018. He emphasized his suppor t from the Republican Par ty of San Diego County and prominently displayed his suppor t for President Donald Trump on his mailers.
