SDSU • Still more bowl games could disappear

title situation.

With two weeks remaining, there are six teams — San Jose State (4-0), Boise State (4-0), Nevada (4-1), Fresno State (3-1), SDSU (3-2) and Wyoming (2-2) — still alive.

Since teams are playing an unbalanced schedule, the top two teams will be determined by winning percentage.

There is one qualifier — if teams are tied in the loss column, then a tiebreaker would be used to determine the top two teams.

That’s where SDSU’s chance comes in.

Here’s what would have to unfold:

First, SDSU must beat Colorado State to finish 4-2 in conference play.

Then, San Jose State must lose its last two games (at Hawaii and against Nevada), Nevada must lose one game (against Fresno State) and win another (at San Jose State) while Fresno State wins one game (at Nevada) and loses another (against winless New Mexico).

All this, among other things, must create a situation with several two-loss teams that puts in place a series of tiebreakers that get to the point where head-tohead games against Hawaii decides the matter.

In that case, SDSU beat Hawaii, whereas San Jose State, Nevada and Fresno State all would have lost to the Rainbow Warriors, giving the Aztecs the title game berth.

Don’t hold your breath. At this point, San Jose State, Boise State and Nevada all control their own destiny.

Boise State had this week’s game against UNLV canceled. The Broncos, who play at Wyoming next, will finish with no more than one loss.

Here’s how crazy this thing is this year, Boise State and San Jose State could both clinch spots by NOT playing because both teams would then finish undefeated.

Now, for the bowl situation.

The Mountain West has four bowl tie-ins this season — the L.A. Bowl (Dec. 30), Arizona Bowl (Dec. 31), Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (Dec. 22) and New Mexico Bowl (Dec. 24).

The Mountain West has said it will award bowl berths to its top four finishers, with the champion going to L.A. and the runnerup to Arizona.

The third- and fourthplace teams will go to the other two bowls, the destination determined by whatever works best for all parties involved.

SDSU’s best chance is beating Colorado State and then somehow winning a tiebreaker with another twoloss team for the fourth spot.

The most favorable scenario would be tying Fresno State at 4-2 and earning the tiebreaker by virtue of a victory over Hawaii. Fresno State lost to the Rainbow Warriors.

One unknown in all of this comes if one or more of the bowl games gets canceled.

It’s a distinct possibility. There now have been 10 bowl games called off, including in the past week the Las Vegas, Sun and Pinstripe bowls.

The L.A. Bowl and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl could be most at risk given the growing concern among county and state officials with COVID-19 cases.

The New Mexico Bowl already was moved to Frisco, Texas, in order to be played this season.

If the L.A. Bowl is canceled, the Mountain West champion would be shifted to the Arizona Bowl.

That would leave the MW runner-up without a bowl game since there would not be enough time — 3-5 days — between playing in the championship game and kickoff for the other two bowl games.

That, certainly, would be disappointing, although no more disappointing than how things worked out for Lloyd with Mary.

It turns out she was already married.
