Garage fire causes $60K in damage, displaces five

CITY HEIGHTS

Five residents were displaced after a fire gutted a City Heights garage and spread to part of the adjacent house early Wednesday morning, San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.

The blaze broke out just before 7 a.m. at a home on Wightman Street near 46th Street. When fire crews arrived they found smoke and flames coming from a garage.

Video shot by OnScene TV showed the garage engulfed in flames. Firefighters removed some charred items, including a metal chair, and piled them next to the structure.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Chad Willenberg told OnScene TV the garage fire extended into the home but was quickly knocked down. He said firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to nearby homes. No one was injured.

Investigators with the Metro Arson Strike Team were trying to determine what caused the fire, said department spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz. She said the fire cause an estimated $60,000 in damage — $50,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents.

The five adults who were displaced were helped by the Red Cross, which placed them in temporary lodging.
