YOUR SAY: VACCINE ROLLOUT
We asked: What do you think about the way federal, state and local government officials are planning for the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine? Is there anything you would have done differently?
The first wave of doses will be a welcome and celebrated relief. But subsequent waves won’t come fast enough for anxious citizens. Pfizer has already announced that its next shipment of its vaccine will likely be delayed. As the Earth’s people slowly (emphasis on the word slowly) become vaccinated, will many of us become disenchanted and even despondent because the opening of the many doors of our lives that were slammed shut this year are reopening ever so slowly?
I have many more questions than thoughts on this.
At what point does vaccine availability move from one group of recipients to another? What happens to mask and social distancing protocols? Will vaccine recipients expect that once they are vaccinated they are free to resume their normal lives without masks and social distancing? Should they? Will anti-vaxxers or vaccine-hesitant people fake being vaccine recipients and try to resume their normal lives? Will grocery stores and other essential establishments see this as the conundrum it is and (properly) maintain COVID-19 protocols indefinitely? Will vaccine hesitancy increase because of this? How long will the vaccines last?
This is the beginning of a three-dimensional chess game, and all I have been told is that I am number 318 million in the line. The San Diego Union-Tribune asked what our thoughts are on “the plan.” Let’s face it, there is no real plan right now.
