In 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln arrived secretly in Washington to take office, following word of a possible assassinat­ion plot in Baltimore.

In 1942, the first shelling of the U.S. mainland during World War II occurred as a Japanese submarine fired on an oil refinery near Santa Barbara, causing little damage.

In 1945, U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima captured Mount Suribachi,

where they raised two American flags. (The second flag-raising was captured in the iconic Associated Press photograph.)

In 1954, the first mass inoculatio­n of schoolchil­dren against polio using the Salk vaccine began in Pittsburgh as some 5,000 students were vaccinated.

SAN DIEGO — Sonia M. Colon of San Diego, CA, passed away unexpected­ly on February 13, 2021, at the age of 77.

Sonia was born to parents Frank and Julia , who resided in Annandale, VA. She grew up as the eldest of four. She attended Pemberton High School in NJ., then attended Northeaste­rn University in Boston and Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, with degrees in Bio-Chemistry.

Sonia will be loved and missed by her brother Frank, sister Cecilia , several nieces and nephew. and close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ada De La Garza of Mission, TX.

A viewing is not available at this time due to Covid concerns. The family is grateful for the condolence­s, but declines flowers and donations.
