The Mariners loaded the bases with two outs and beat the Padres 5-4 on a walk-off single by Julio Rodriguez in the Cactus League opener for both teams Sunday at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box: After Jorge Mateo dropped a bunt single, Jorge Oña launched a two-run homer into the wind and into the bullpen beyond left field to tie the game 4-4 in the sixth inning. … Wil Myers sent the second pitch of the fourth inning the other way and just over the right field wall. … Manny Machado walked and flared a broken-bat single to right field in his two times up. … Trent Grisham led off the game with a double rocketed just inside the bag down the right field line. … Austin Nola launched a double that bounced on the warning track and over the wall in left-center field. … The first Padres batter to strike out was Brian O’Grady in the fifth inning.

Balls and strikes: Adrian Morejon struggled with command of his breaking pitches for much of his two innings, but he ended his outing by striking out three straight batters to strand the two runners he walked to start the second inning. He allowed one run on two singles and three walks. … Taylor Williams, an intriguing right-hander who is out of minor league options, began the third inning with two quick outs. He then allowed three runs on a walk, successive singles and a two-run double over left fielder Tommy Pham’s head before the inning was called. Williams also got the first two outs in the fourth inning before issuing a walk and allowing a single. He ended his day with a strikeout. ... Nabil Crismatt and Reiss Knehr threw two scoreless innings apiece before Parker Markel surrendere­d the winning run in the ninth.

Extra bases: O’Grady, who is expected to mainly be a backup at all three outfield spots, started at first base. … Rancho Bernardo High alum Gosuke Katoh, a minor leaguer in big league camp after signing with the Padres this offseason, subbed in at first base and made a nice stop on a hard grounder down the line for the final out of the sixth inning. … The Padres left runners at first and second in the top of the first inning but never made a third out. The inning was called after Mariners starter Marco Gonzales had thrown his 25th pitch. In the first two weeks of spring training, managers can end an inning if their pitcher has thrown more than 20 pitches. … Attendance was announced at 1,744.
