AAUW announces local Speech Trek winners
The American Association of University Women Del Mar-Leucadia Branch announces the winners of its recent Speech Trek contest for high school students. Hosted on Zoom by branch Speech Trek Coordinator Sharon Corbett-Parry, eight contestants from five high schools presented original speeches on the topic: “Has social media helped or hindered the breaking down of barriers for women and girls?” Halle Schaffer, a senior at San Dieguito High School Academy, won the $500 first prize. She is president of her Speech and Debate Team and the Greater Encinitas-Carlsbad Leos club. Schaffer will now compete at the state level. Sanjana Kumar, a freshman at Francis Parker School in San Diego, won the $300 second prize. Ella Engelberg, a freshman at Canyon Crest Academy, won the $200 third prize. Three local Toastmasters served as judges. Videos of the winning speeches can be viewed on the AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia channel on YouTube. AAUW is a national organization that advances equity for women and girls. Membership is open to all college graduates with an associate or higher degree. Re “Jennifer Campbell has brought recall effort on herself” (Feb. 21): Readers may ask “Who are these people seeking to recall Council President Jen Campbell?” I am a 50-year resident of Council District 2. I lived in Mission Beach for 25 years, was active in and an officer on the Mission Beach Town Council and a board member of the Save the Coaster Committee. I now live in Ocean Beach. For more than 30 years I have been involved in Mission Bay Park advocacy.
I am offended by her actions pushing a shortterm vacation rental proposal “negotiated” privately
that would nullify San Diego municipal code zoning for single-family homes. I am offended by her treatment of constituents she disagrees with, and I am offended that she was elected council president despite several hundred people testifying on behalf of someone I consider to be far better suited to leading the San Diego City Council.
I listened to the entire eight hours; only a fraction of the calls supported Campbell.
