San Diego State knew the teams on its 2021 football schedule. Now the Aztecs know in which order those teams will be played.

SDSU’s 12-game schedule was released on Friday and after four nonconference games — three of them at “home” — the Aztecs have an open week before opening Mountain West play when they host New Mexico on Oct. 9.

That game will be at Carson’s Dignity Health Sports Park, where SDSU is playing its home games for the second straight season while Aztec Stadium is under construction in Mission Valley.

The game with New Mexico will be the first opportunity to share the field with former SDSU head coach Rocky Long, who was hired last season as the Lobos’ defensive coordinator. Former SDSU assistant coach Danny Gonzales is New Mexico’s head coach.

New Mexico is one of three Mountain Division teams on SDSU’s schedule, along with Air Force and

Boise State. SDSU plays a road game in midseason against the Falcons. They host Boise State in their regular season finale.

As usual, SDSU will play each of its five West Division opponents — Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, San Jose State and UNLV — during its eight-game conference schedule.

SDSU is the home team in four of its first five games, playing only a Sept. 11 nonconference game at Arizona on the road.

Kickoff times and TV broadcasts networks will be announced in the coming months.

Some games also could be moved to weekdays — typically a Friday afternoon or evening — when the networks determine their broadcast schedules.

The Mountain West will return to two six-team divisions this season after competing as one 12-team division in 2020.

The division winners in the Mountain and West divisions will meet in the conference championship game on Dec. 4.

The Aztecs finished 4-2 in the MW and 4-4 overall last season.
