Teen fatally shot during argument at Eastlake park
CHULA VISTA
A 17-year-old boy hanging out with friends was fatally shot Thursday night at Sunset View Park in Chula Vista’s Eastlake neighborhood, police said Friday.
Investigators say the shooting happened after an argument with another group at the park. They are asking witnesses and tipsters to come forward.
Witnesses reported hearing gunfire just after 7:20 p.m. at the park off South Greensview Drive, Chula Vista police spokesman Lt. Dan Peak said in a news release.
Police arrived to find the teen on the ground in the parking lot, suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics took the victim to a hospital, where he died. Peak did not release the teen’s name.
According to Peak, the victim had gone to the park with friends. There, he encountered a group of four people he may have known and an argument ensued. One of them pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the teen.
The foursome — believed to be between the ages of 17 and 20 — took off in a dark four-door Honda or Acura sedan, Peak said.
Peak cautioned that the investigation has just started and the motive remains unknown. He also said there is “no evidence to support this incident is or is not related” to a shooting May 6 at the same park. In that case, a 15-yearold boy was shot in the arm in a restroom as his grandmother waited in the car.
Police are trying to find witnesses and have asked that anyone with information about the incident contact San Diego Crime Stoppers. Anonymous tips can be left by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. To leave anonymous tips online or via mobile app, go to sdAbout crimestoppers.org.
