Can’t we find a smarter way to move tracks? “Soil studies underway to determine best route for Del Mar railroad tunnel”

- Mira Mesa

(March 7): Your story detailed the San Diego Association of Governments’ proposal to tunnel under Del Mar to move the railroad tracks away from the bluffs along the ocean. It is estimated this 1.7-mile realignment would cost at least $3 billion and would take 10 years to complete.

Perhaps there is another way. Why not move the tracks inland about 100 feet? Even if the bluffs are eroding about 6 inches each year, this solution would last for about 200 years. Of course this would require the purchase, via eminent domain, of all the lots along the tracks. The cost of these purchases would probably still be a bargain compared to $3 billion, even when you add the cost of grading and track-laying. Has SANDAG given this any thought? the Solana Beach depot. Since it will consist of two tracks, one track could go through the center of town, the other at Interstate 5. The main street could be reduced to a two-lane road and the track would be in the center. The coaster could have its stop near the old train depot. I think that people who drive the coast highway understand the travel is slow, and that is why we take it.

I would think that the freight train that I remember waking us up at 5 a.m. would be redirected to the I-5 route as much as possible.

I understand the residents of Del Mar should have the final say, but please let’s just take a look at this option. I think it would make Del Mar a destination stop for a day trip and get a few more cars off the streets.
