Man sentenced for trying to bring loaded gun onto plane SAN DIEGO

A 36-year-old San Diego man has been sentenced to nine months in custody after he was found guilty of trying to board an international flight with a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage, officials said.

Elan Leroy Gwynn was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino in connection with the incident on March 17, 2020, that occurred at San Diego International Airport. In addition to the ninemonth sentence, Gwynn was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and ordered to forfeit the gun and ammunition that was seized.

Gwynn admitted in his plea agreement that he was heading through a security checkpoint before a flight to London when he placed his carry-on luggage on the conveyor belt for the Xray machines and TSA officers spotted an object inside that appeared to be a loaded gun, officials said.

Harbor Police officers responded to the airport and found a Glock 19 replica “ghost gun” — with a 15-round magazine — loose in the bottom of Gwynn’s bag. The gun was loaded with 11 rounds. Gwynn also was in possession of several grams of methamphetamine, officials said. The FBI responded and placed Gwynn under arrest.

A ghost gun is a firearm put together from parts, usually from a kit, and it doesn’t have any serial number or other identifying markings. The guns are illegal in California.

“Firearms have no place on airplanes and pose a serious threat to all aboard, “Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman said in a statement. “If individuals engage in this type of behavior, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will investigate and bring appropriate charges.”
