Padres trying to refine their running game for new season.

- KEVIN ACEE

Batter’s box: Brian O’Grady, fighting for what might be one available bench spot, led off the bottom of first with a triple. His single in the third inning was the only other hit in four innings against Angels starter Shohei Ohtani. … Victor Caratini, Jake Cronenworth and Pedro Florimon all doubled. … Jorge Mateo and Wil Myers singled. … A Padres pitcher swung the bat for the first time this spring — and got an infield single. Craig Stammen lined a ball off the pitcher’s glove to make Padres pitchers 1-for-6 in Cactus League play.

Balls and strikes: Blake Snell battled his fastball command all day but threw 31⁄3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and walked two while throwing just 30 strikes among his 61 pitches. … Mark Melancon relieved Snell, and threw 12⁄3 scoreless innings. It was his sixth straight appearance without allowing a run. He has allowed one run and five hits in seven innings this spring. … Stammen allowed a hit and a walk in 12⁄3 scoreless innings. … Dan Altavilla got the final out of the seventh inning. … Keone Kela pitched his fifth scoreless inning of the spring in the eighth. … Albert Pujols homered off Jordan Guerrero in the ninth.

Extra bases: O’Grady almost made a running catch in the third inning but had the ball carom off his glove for a twobase error. … Mateo, in a battle with O’Grady for a bench spot, played an Ohtani hit off the wall in the fifth inning, turned and made a nice throw into second base, where Ohtani just beat the throw but came off the bag as Jake Cronenworth applied the tag. … Jurickson Profar started at first base for the first time this spring.

On deck: Joe Musgrove is scheduled to make his fourth start of the spring, 1:05 p.m. today against the Royals in Surprise, Ariz.
