The University of San Diego held a memorial Mass on Monday for a 21-year-old student who died after her car was hit head on by another vehicle police said may have been racing in Linda Vista.

A university spokesman said Haley Takeda’s family attended the on-campus service.

Takeda died Saturday from injuries she suffered in the head-on crash Friday night. The driver who struck Takeda’s car, identified as Marc Anthony George III, 17, also was killed. Takeda and George lived in San Diego.

“She was a very active Torero and a senior majoring in International Business and Spanish, with a minor in Business Analytics,” Carmen Vazquez, vice president for student affairs, said in a note sent to the campus community Sunday. “In addition to being a talented member of USD’s Dance Team, she was also the Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Haley’s involvement also included the International Business Club and the Student International Business Council.”

This was the third year Takeda had attended USD. She had attended high school in San Mateo.

A family friend of George told CBS8 the Kearny High School senior, who played football, went by the nickname Jiggy.

“The whole family is in ruins right now. It’s ... just heartbreaking for everybody in Linda Vista,” Able Urquidez told the station.

Two memorials in honor of George and Takeda sat at the crash site Monday.

Seven others were injured in the crash, which happened just before 11 p.m. Friday on Genesee Avenue near the Linda Vista Community Park. Authorities said it appeared two cars — both driven by teens — may have been racing. Takeda was traveling in the opposite direction.

According to police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office, George and another 17-year-old boy were driving west when George’s 2010 Toyota Camry passed the other boy’s 2008 Nissan Altima on the right at a high speed, moved to the left and sideswiped the Nissan. The Toyota continued west and collided head on with Takeda’s 2020 Mazda3.

She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

George also died at a hospital.
