-

A pair of former San Diego County prep wrestlers earned All-American honors this weekend at the NCAA Division I championships in St. Louis.

Cal Poly redshirt sophomore Bernie Truax (Rancho Buena Vista) placed fourth at 174 pounds. Seeded 12th, Truax defeated No. 5-seed Logan Massa of Michigan and No. 4 Mikey Labriola of Nebraska to reach the semifinals where he lost to No. 1-seeded Michael Kamerer of Iowa.

In the third-place match, Truax beat Labrioloa for a second time, this time 8-3.

Two-time California state champion Jaden Abas (Rancho Bernardo), now a redshirt freshman at Stanford, finished seventh at 149 pounds.

Abas lost his first match to the eventual third-place finisher, Yahya Thomas of Northwestern, but battled back to win four straight matches in the consolation bracket. He edged Brock Mauller of Missouri 5-3 in the seventh-place match.

Truax and Abas achieved All-American honors by placing in the top eight in brackets that started with 32 wrestlers.

Truax and Abas are the first San Diego prep wrestlers to earn All-American honors since Todd Schavrein (Poway) of Missouri in 2011.

College football

• North Carolina agreed to a one-year contract extension for coach Mack Brown and three-year deals with all 10 fulltime assistant coaches. The school said that the 69-yearold Brown’s deal runs through the 2025 season.

Sports and courts

• Boxing star Ger vonta Davis was indicted on 14 counts related to a hit-and-run crash in downtown Baltimore last fall, court records show. Davis, 26, was indicted in Baltimore Circuit Court. Soccer

American defender Chris Gloster, 20, has been signed by Major League Soccer’s New York City from PSV Eindhoven’s youth system.

• Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku has been given permission to leave Italy and join his Belgium teammates after returning a negative test for COVID-19 ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.

• When Juventus considers whether to extend Cristiano Ronaldo’s massive contract, a drop in income from TV rights over the next three seasons could be a significant factor. The coronavirus pandemic and the failure of Italian soccer teams to make an impact in European competition only partly explain the expected economic hit to Serie A when its international TV rights through 2024 are assigned today.

• Zlatan Ibrahimovic has unfinished business at the World Cup. The striker has come out of international retirement at the age of 39 and is set to play his first match for Sweden since 2016 when the team plays a World Cup qualifier against Georgia in Stockholm on Thursday.

Ibrahimovic’s initial aim is to play for Sweden at the continent-wide European Championship starting in June but looming further in the distance is the World Cup in Qatar that takes place in November and December 2022 — when he will be 41.
