Vote is today to choose Weber’s replacement
Voters in the 79th Assembly District will choose among five candidates to replace former Assemblywoman Shirley Weber in a special primary election today.
Candidates competing for the seat include Republican businessman Marco Contreras and four Democrats: restorative justice consultant Aeiramique Glass, labor organizer Leticia Munguia, teacher Shane Parmely and Akilah Weber, an obstetrician/gynecologist and La Mesa councilwoman who is former Assemblywoman Shirley Weber’s daughter.
Shirley Weber stepped down from her seat in January, after Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed her to serve as California’s secretary of state.
In-person voting will take place today between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Residents of the district can cast their votes in person at their local polling place or at the Registrar of Voters Office on 5600 Overland Ave. in Kearny Mesa.
The 79th Assembly District includes southeastern San Diego, the cities of La Mesa and Lemon Grove, and parts of Chula Vista, Bonita and National City. To confirm whether you live in the district, check your name and address at the Registrar of Voters website.
Voters who wish to vote in person can find their assigned polling places in their mail ballot packet, or on the county website. People voting in person must wear a mask and maintain social distancing.
The county issued more than 300,000 mail ballots to eligible voters in the district. As of Monday, more than 51,000 voters had returned their ballots through the mail, at county collection boxes, or through early voting offered at the registrar’s office.
Any voters who have not mailed or dropped off their ballots must return them by 8 p.m. today to a drop-off box or the registrar’s office for the ballots to be counted. Mail voters must sign and date the return envelope, seal the completed ballot inside, and return it to a mail ballot drop-off location. Locations of ballot drop boxes can be found on an interactive map on the county website.
If no candidate gets a majority, the two top vote-getters will return for a runoff election June 8.
